Sororities are social student-led organizations found primarily on college and university campuses across North America. Most are affiliated with national umbrella organizations such as the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), which supports 26 inter/national women’s sororities, or the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which represents historically Black Greek-letter organizations. Sororities bring students together around shared principles—often centered on scholarship, leadership, service, and sisterhood—and provide a structured community experience outside the classroom.
Sororities are values-based organizations, meaning their purpose is grounded in their founding principles. They typically have rituals and creeds that promote ideals such as academic achievement, friendship, civic engagement, personal growth, and leadership. Members initiated into a sorority become members for life and gain access to a vast intergenerational network of alumnae who offer mentorship, professional connections, and support across the country and around the world. Members usually join through a recruitment or intake process and participate in leadership development programs, philanthropic fundraising, community service, academic support initiatives, and social and educational events. Many sororities operate with a local chapter structure led by student officers and supported by alumnae advisors, while remaining connected to a broader inter/national organization that provides training, risk management standards, and lifelong membership opportunities.
Sororities have played a significant role in shaping campus life for more than a century—empowering women, fostering lifelong friendships, and advancing philanthropic and service initiatives. Today, sororities increasingly emphasize accountability, member education, belonging, and proactive prevention efforts to ensure safe and mission-driven experiences aligned with institutional values.

The Panhellenic Council (PHC) is a local chapter of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), which serves as the governing council for many social female fraternities or sororities on a National level. Local chapters of female fraternities/sororities associated with NPC are required to join campus PHC Chapters per national rules. The PHC sponsors a significant portion of the Primary Recruitment Process, which occurs in August every year. The S&T PHC greatly promotes inter-chapter coordination and cooperation through many sorority social events, partners with all different types of campus organizations, and provides several great scholastic resources to the campus community.
