Fraternities

Fraternities are social student-led organizations found primarily on college and university campuses across North America. Most are affiliated with national umbrella organizations such as the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), which supports more than 50 men’s fraternities. Fraternities bring students together around shared principles—often centered on scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood—and provide a structured community experience outside the classroom.

Fraternities are values-based organizations, meaning their purpose is grounded on their founding values. They usually have rituals and creeds which promote the ideals of the organization like academic achievement, friendship, community service, and leadership. Member initiated into a fraternity become a member for life and gain a vast membership network that can provide countless connections throughout the country and world. Members typically join through a recruitment process and participate in activities such as leadership development programs, philanthropic fundraising, community service, academic support initiatives, and social events. Many fraternities operate with a local chapter structure guided by student officers and alumni advisors, while also being connected to a broader national network that offers training, risk management standards, and lifelong membership opportunities.

Fraternities have played a significant role in shaping campus life for more than a century—building professional networks, fostering friendships, and creating traditions. Fraternities increasingly emphasize accountability, member education, and proactive prevention efforts to ensure safe and mission-driven experiences aligned with institutional values.

Fraternities have made Missouri S&T their home for over 120 years.                                                     Learn About Joining a Fraternity

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is a local chapter of the National Interfraternity Conference (NIC), which serves as a governing body for many social male fraternities on a(n) (Inter)National level. Local chapters of fraternities associated with the NIC are encouraged to join campus IFC Chapters for support. The S&T IFC Chapter aides its chapters through several service events, such as the Greek Service Day during the annual Greek Week, and the community-wide philanthropy Out Til Midnight. Moreover, they provide major educational opportunities through presentations and workshops from national, award-winning speakers for topics such as Hazing Prevention and Alcohol Awareness Education.
