Fraternity & Sorority Life creates lifelong friendships and develops leaders

Fraternity & Sorority Life at Missouri S&T is home to a dynamic community of student leaders committed to scholarship, service, leadership, and lifelong connection. With multiple governing councils representing nationally affiliated and independent organizations, our community offers students a place to belong, grow, and make a lasting impact on campus and beyond. Whether you are seeking academic support, meaningful friendships, leadership development, or opportunities to serve, there is a place for you in Greek Life at S&T.

Our community is led by four governing councils—the Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council (PHC), Greek Independent Council (GIC), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)—each providing structure, accountability, and support for their member chapters. Together, these councils promote high standards of academic excellence, ethical leadership, and responsible social engagement while celebrating the unique traditions and values of each organization.

Fraternity and sorority members at S&T consistently outperform the all-campus GPA, contribute thousands of service hours each year, and raise significant funds for philanthropic causes locally and nationally. Beyond statistics, our organizations cultivate confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging—preparing students to lead in their careers, communities, and industries long after graduation.

About Our Community

Fraternities and sororities have been on college campuses since the late 18th-century. These organizations are referred to as “Greek” because their names consist of Greek letters that serve as a reminder of the group’s values. Fraternities and sororities are values-based organizations, meaning their purpose is grounded on their founding values. They usually have rituals and creeds which promote the ideals of the organization like academic achievement, friendship, community service, and leadership. Upon initiation into a fraternity or sorority, you become a member for life and gain a vast membership network that can provide countless connections throughout the country and world.

Fraternities and sororities have made Missouri S&T their home for over 120 years. S&T has 25 Greek chapters in total, with 20 fraternities and 5 sororities. Approximately 27% of all undergraduate S&T students are a member of a fraternity or sorority. Our chapters have large, successful alumni networks that help our chapters and their members grow and succeed both at and beyond S&T.

Statistics

Greek Life at S&T is a thriving community. Below are some statistics and metrics that highlight the impact of Greek Life.

  • 1300+ students, ~27% of campus, are in a fraternity or sorority
  • 3.239 community GPA in fall 2025, compared to 3.236 all-campus
  • 80%+ of Greek students are involved in other campus organizations
  • $125,000+ raised annually for philanthropic causes
  • Higher retention rate than non-Greek students

Events

Individual chapters host many events on their own. The four Greek councils host multiple community events for all Greek students to enjoy. The most well-known events that Greek students participate in are:

  • Greek Week- a week of various events and competitions designed to bring out the competitive spirit among chapters.
  • St. Pat's- most Greek chapters participate in S&T's most cherished tradition, competing in events hosted by the St. Pat's Board.
  • Greek Sing- a Battle-of-the-Bands-style competition where chapters perform music and are judged on singing and musical ability.

Philanthropy

S&T's Greek organizations all have a designated philanthropy that they campaign and raise money for. Individual chapters often have both a national and local philanthropy that they work with, and the four Greek councils collectively host events for philanthropic causes. In addition to individual chapter philanthropy events, every spring the entire Greek community participates in Brighter Lights, Brighter Futures, a week of philanthropy events organized by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils that benefits their chosen philanthropy, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of South-Central Missouri.

Missouri S&T routinely raises over $125,000 for philanthropy donations across all chapters and councils.

Community Service

Individual chapters require members to complete a preset number of service hours every semester. Chapters partner with local community organizations to volunteer and give back to the Rolla community. Popular community service options taken by our chapters include:

  • Adopting a road or highway for cleanup
  • Mentoring and tutoring at-risk children
  • Serve the homeless with the Rolla Mission
  • Visiting with children at the Kaleidoscope Discovery Center
  • Distributing food at the Grace Food Pantry

Housing

Nineteen of our 25 chapters have housing located near campus. Non-Greek freshman and sophomore students are required to live in on-campus housing by Residential Life. Greek chapters are known as University Approved Housing facilities, meaning that freshman and sophomore Greeks meet their live-in requirement by residing in a Greek facility. Oftentimes, Greek housing is less expensive than residential facilities and nearby apartments, in addition to providing more engagement opportunities, organization-curated meals, and bonding experiences with chapter members.

Once a student has received and confirmed a bid for a fraternity or sorority in the Greek Member Management system, they will be prompted to confirm their housing status. By confirming they will live in the chapter house, a housing agreement with the Office of Residential Life will automatically be canceled.

Students may move into the fraternity or sorority house when the organization allows. For fraternities, this is typically the Friday or Saturday before Opening Week. Please check with the specific organization to determine these dates. Many organizations may allow the student to move in sooner. If you have any questions throughout this process, please explore our website or contact our office directly via phone at (573) 341-6771 or email involvement@mst.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Participating in the fraternity/sorority can be very time consuming. However, we encourage the learning of time management skills, both as a new member and an active member, which will help them with their involvement in the fraternity/sorority, on campus, and eventually in their professional career.

Fraternity and Sorority Life offers a variety of involvement opportunities, including intramural sports, community service, and assuming leadership positions within each fraternity/sorority. Each member will find a level of commitment that is comfortable. By learning to balance academics, fraternal involvement, campus involvement, and social commitments, each member is more likely to be successful later on in professional life.

A: Each fraternity/sorority is self-supported through dues charged to all members. In the first year of membership, a few one-time expenses are assessed. After those initial payments are made, your member's only expense will be their regular dues. If housing is offered, fraternity/sorority lodging and meals are competitive with other housing options. A variety of payment plans are usually offered.

A: Fraternities and sororities organize a process of meeting members and getting to know their organization: recruitment. Recruitment offers your student an opportunity to meet other people on campus and learn what each organization has to offer its members.

Each chapter has its own unique programs and strengths, yet all are primarily based on the development of character, social skills, friendship, service to humanity, and academic skills. Just like researching, visiting, and choosing a college, your child should seek out the fraternity or sorority that best fits their personality, needs, and desires. They will find that there is a place for everyone. See each council's website listed above for information on how to join.

A: Be supportive and learn as much as you can by asking questions of your child as they meet people through the recruitment process. Fellow members will be more than happy to tell them (and you) about their group.

Because your endorsement of their choice means a lot to them, we encourage parents to ask questions and become as informed as possible about fraternity/sorority life. If parents have any questions, they are encouraged to call the Department of Student Involvement for answers. (573) 341-6771 or email at involvement@mst.edu.

A: If you are offered and accept a bid to become a member of a fraternity or sorority, you are joining a group of men or women who share common goals and experiences. You will likely have the option of living in the chapter house as early as your freshmen year. Each individual chapter (fraternity or sorority) will have more specific information.

The cost of living in the house is 60-80% of the average cost of living in a residential hall. This cost includes room, board, and a meal plan. Many of our chapters have ample parking available at no additional fee. The meal plan includes 14 meals during the week (3 meals Monday - Thursday; breakfast and lunch on Friday). The physical facilities have a variety of options that vary between them - many include study rooms, fitness facilities, common areas, and formal dining areas.

A: Alcohol abuse is unhealthy and inconsistent with Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) ideals. All fraternities and sororities are expected to uphold state, county, and city laws and university policies regarding the consumption of alcohol. While opportunities for all college students to choose wisely and poorly exist, Fraternity and Sorority Life at Missouri S&T provides a supportive and educational environment that ensures that if a member chooses to consume alcohol, to do so in a responsible manner. In addition, many of our students do not drink. Fraternity/sorority students who choose not to drink will know it's ok and feel comfortable with their decision.

A: Students often find managing their time difficult when moving from the highly structured high school environment to the freedoms of college. Fraternities and sororities assist in that transition by offering scholarship programs, which might include study partners, mandatory study hours, and time management workshops. Fraternities and sororities often have an all-chapter GPA equal to or higher than the all-campus GPA due to the vast resources available withing chapters.

Your child can access the network of fraternity/sorority members who already know how to use campus resources like the library, study skills centers, computer labs, and academic advisors. While fraternities and sororities are concerned about the academic achievement of their members, your child is still ultimately responsible for utilizing the resources made available. You can research yourself! Fraternity and sorority grades are posted on our Policies & Reports page!

A: New fraternity/sorority members all experience a period of orientation. During this time, your child and the other new members will participate in meetings to learn about the university and the fraternity/sorority, leadership retreats, community service projects, and activities designed to build friendships among the new members and the older members. All fraternities & sororities oppose hazing and are committed to a membership education period that instills a sense of responsibility and comm
